Flow Country Showcase for International Evaluation Team

The Flows gave us rain, sun and thankfully some wind to dispel the dreaded midge during the five day evaluation visit from UNESCO representatives.

The Flow Country is now one step closer to possible inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Earlier this month, a group from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) visited the Flow Country. The group was tasked by UNESCO to examine submissions for World Heritage nominations for natural sites.

The inspectors spent five days last week travelling across the Flow Country to visit sites and attend formal meetings. Sites visited included Plantlife Munsary, RSPB Forsinard Flows, Langwell and Cnoc an Alaskie, giving the delegation a well rounded trip to all corners of the vast Flow Country.

Gaining world heritage site status would present a number of opportunities for the local community whether through restoration works, for training opportunities around that, for branding of produce.

A peatland like the flow country can’t be appreciated by just driving through it. You need to stop and you need to spend time. That’s the way that you’ll see the bird species, start to pick out the different sphagnum mosses and all the amazing biodiversity that’s out there.
